A site dedicated to the comic book
censorship crusade of the 1940's and 1950's, Seduction of the Innocent , and the works of Dr. Fredric Wertham.
Seduction of the Innocent is a book written by psychiatrist Dr. Fredric Wertham about the harmful effects of comic books. Published in 1954 and reprinted several times since, the book represents the culmination of years of reasearch into
juvenile delinquency. SOTI, as it is known among comic book collectors, laid the blame for delinquency largely upon comic books. The book help spark a United States Senate investigation and the formation of the Comics Code Authority. More than
any other publication, it was SOTI that nearly killed the entire United States comic book industry in the mid-1950's. You'll find a handy timeline of the anti-comics crusade here.
How's this for irony?
In general, comic books cited by Dr. Wertham in Seduction of the Innocent are more sought-after by collectors, and are worth more, than comics
not mentioned in Seduction of the Innocent. Comic books mentioned in the text of SOTI are worth an average of 20% more than
comics not mentioned in SOTI. Comic books PICTURED in SOTI are worth an average of 50% more than comics not mentioned in SOTI!
These figures are according to the Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide, 38th edition.
Help us find the LOST SOTI books!
Hundreds of comics were referenced by Dr. Fredric Wertham in Seduction of the Innocent, the classic 1954 anti-comics diatribe.
However, fewer than 150 of those books have been identified by the collecting community. Can you help identify the LOST SOTI books?
NEWS
When ParentDish did a story about Archie Comics' introduction of a gay character, they mentioned the role former Archie publisher John Goldwater
played in the early days of the Comics Code. They also provided a link within
the story to the best source of information about that time period. Rather than
simply putting in a link to Wikipedia's entry on Seduction of the Innocent, as many others do,
blogger Tom Henderson chose instead to link to SeductionOfTheInnocent.org. Thanks, Tom!
